What Am I To Do?

There's still a number of Susan Wiggs books I haven't read, but the library only has one of them!! After I read that, they won't have any more Susan Wiggs books for me to read!! I don't want to have to buy them...

Book Review - The Christmas Basket by Debbie Macomber

Debbie Macomber writes a short novel every winter. So, she admits that it is short, but The Christmas Basket was a little too short on details for me. I'm not even sure I can name a main character. The story started out with Noelle McDowell, who ends up connecting with her former high school love, Thom, after ten years. However, the end of the story is focused more on Noelle's mother and the estranged relationship she has with Thom's mother, when I would have liked to see more of Noelle and Thom's relationship. The last page of the book was very truncated and could have used at least one more page of detail.

Overall, I guess if you go into it knowing that it is indeed a short, surfacy novel, you can enjoy it as a cute Christmas read.

Wednesday Weigh In

I lost the pound that I gained last week. As you can see I haven't been really counting my points this week. I start out the day counting points, but when I get to the mid-afternoon, and I see that I've already eaten almost all my points, I give up....
I'm still feeling hungry, which makes me want to eat, so that's hard too.

Book Review - Enchanted Afternoon by Susan Wiggs

Enchanted Afternoon is an intriguing story about Isabel Fish-Wooten, lady adventurer, and her chance at love with Dr. Blue Calhoun. I enjoyed the secondary characters as much as I did the main characters and the sub-stories were just as interesting as the main story. I do wish though, that Wiggs would have spent more time on Isabel's relationship with Blue. I liked them so much; I wanted to have an even more personal view into their relationship than Wiggs allowed. Overall, a thumbs up.

Book Review - Enchanted Afternoon by Susan Wiggs

Enchanted Afternoon was is about Helena Cabot, who in the early 1900s, leaves and divorces her husband once he starts beating her. She starts a lodge for other woman to escape to and develops it into a hot springs resort as a way to support the lodge and the woman who live there. She has a love interest and Wiggs spends the perfect amount of time on the women's issues and on the love interest. The book causes the reader to question and think about some of the same issues that Helena deals with - how can she have her independence and be her own person and love a man at the same time? It is by no means my favorite Wiggs' book, but it did not have the usual things that bug me about some of Wiggs' books either.

Book Review - Snowfall at Willow Lake by Susan Wiggs

Snowfall at Willow Lake is Susan Wiggs' fourth book in the Lakeshore Chronicles series. I was prepared not to like it because the main character is Sophie Bellamy, the ex-wife of Greg Bellamy who was featured in the third book of the series, Dockside. Sophie was painted as a bad parent since she abandoned her kids for her job. I was interested to see how Wiggs would make the reader sympathetic to Sophie's situation, which she did by placing Sophie in the middle of a hostage situation which she escapes from. Sophie was definitely more likeable in this book than in Dockside, so I suppose Wiggs succeeded in that. After the hostage situation, Sophie moves to Avalon to be a mother to her kids. She falls in love with Noah, the first guy she meets in town, and they eventually live happily ever after.

Overall, I wanted more from this book. It was a pleasant enough read, but I wished we got to see more of Sophie and Noah's relationship; I wish Wiggs had gone deeper with the story. The sub story about Daisy and Max, Sophie's children was boring. I wanted to be reading about Sophie, not her children. I felt the same way with Dockside and Summer at Willow Lake when Wiggs was trying to develop the characters of Daisy and Max in those books - it was boring and I couldn't wait until I could start reading about the main characters. Wiggs plans to keep up the Lakeshore Chronicles until the end of time, so I can only expect that one day we will see a book where Daisy is the main character, and possibly a whole book for Max. A book about Daisy could be interesting because Wiggs will have more time to develop Daisy's character, and Daisy is getting a little more interesting now that she's living on her own and has a baby. But who knows?

Wednesday Weigh In

I've gained a pound since last week. I guess I should be thankful that that's all I've gained considering how much I ate. I don't regret eating our expensive dinner or eating the Reeses Pieces at the movie theater, but I probably didn't need the meats and cheeses that we brought along with us. Oh well.

Quesadilla with meat 7 points = 11 points total
2 squares of Ghirardelli chocolate 4 points = 15 points total

I really didn't want to count these points, but Hubby convinced me to. Thanks Hubby!

Monday's Points

Goal 24 points; exercise = 4 points; ?? of 35 extra points used

Quinoa 2 points = 2 points total

Potatoes 3 points = 7 points total
Taco Grande
3 Lindor Chocolate Balls

Well, well, well. Hubby managed to count points through our vacation weekend, but I’m not that ambitious, but I don’t want to start gaining weight, so I know I need to start counting. Since we ate out, I’m not exactly sure of all the points of the foods I sampled, but I thought I would at least right down the foods I ate.

Book Review - The Drifter by Susan Wiggs

I was very pleasantly surprised by The Drifter. It is set in the early 1900s, so it is one of Wiggs' historical fiction novels, and I expected it to be too long and the characters to be unbelievably stubborn, but they were not. I thought both the main male and female characters were very believable and acted reasonably. Also, Wiggs spent the appropriate amount of time on the secondary characters, which I appreciate. Sometimes, she will spend too much time on the secondary characters, leaving the reader bored. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and dare say that it is my favorite Wiggs' book yet.

Thursday's Points

Goal = 24; plus 4 points from exercising;
?? of 35 extra points used

Quinoa cereal 2 points = 2 points total
Fiber One bar 2 points = 4 points total
Polenta 2 points = 6 points total
Pepperoni 3 points = 9 points total
Popcorn 2 points = 11 points total
Fudgsicle 1 point = 12 points total
Chicken and beef fajitas ?? points = ?? points total

We went out to eat for Valentines, so I really don’t know how many points to add for my fajitas, beans, and rice, and corn chips. Although, my weight today is 4 pounds more than it was yesterday. I know we’re not supposed to judge weight change from day to day, but I still say shucks!

I have some hard days ahead because hubby and I are going on a mini vacation this weekend in celebration of Valentines Day, so we’ll have more opportunities to eat out.

Thursday's Wednesday Weigh In

I forgot to post my weigh in yesterday, but I did weigh. I lost one pound, which I guess is pretty good considering I didn't count points and I didn't work out.

Yesterday was the first day that I have worked out since becoming sick, and it was hard, but good. I still have a bit of a cough, but I think the cardio really helped it because it sounds a lot better this morning.

Book Review - The Reluctant Suitor by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss

I know, I know, the title is pretty cheesy. I was not as pleased with this book as I was with the previous one I read by Woodiwiss, The Elusive Flame. I would say that less than half the book is about the so-called reluctant suitor, who really isn't that reluctant. The latter third of the book deals with the foe of the story, and I really didn't enjoy reading about him and the sordid things he was planning to do. The plot of the story was pretty much the same as Woodiwiss' The Elusive Flame, which leaves me to wonder if all her books follow the same path: a beautiful, head-strong and independent female and the prideful male (albeit, a handsome one) have 3 months to decide if they want to be together forever. In this case, the male lead, Colton Wyndham suffers from a pre-arranged marriage to Lady Adriana, but there's an out. If after three months of courting Lady Adriana, he can decide to not marry her. Then, of course, they do get together, the female gets pregnant immediately, and the foes in the story start to work their evil plans. Then, in the ultimate evil act, the foe disposes of the entire house of servants, leaving the lead female, although pregnant, to out wile the foe and save herself. The husband comes home just as the female has things under control, they revive the servants, and they live happily ever after. There were many more similarities between the two books, but I don’t care to discuss them now.

Bottom line: this Woodiwiss novel did not inspire me to read any more of her book. I actually have one ready to read, but I'm going to take it back to the library.

Much Better Now

As you can see, I have not been counting points since the middle of the week when my illness took a turn for the worse. I feel much better today, but I still have coughing spells. Needless to say, I haven't been to the gym all week, and I'm grateful to say that I haven't instantaneously gained 10 pounds like I feared. I shall resume counting points tomorrow, although it has been nice not counting, but my sickness kept me from eating much at all.

Wednesday Weigh In

I've lost 1.5 pounds since last Wednesday. This is great news! But, with being sick and not being able to go to the gym, I fear I will gain it all back. I think my fears lie in the fact that I haven't weighed this little in a long time, so it somehow seems magical to me. However, I am starting to focus more on what I look like/how clothes fit more than the number on the scale. I think I will reach my weight goal long before I reach my, "I like how my stomach looks" goal. I had hubby take pictures of me, the same pose I did a year ago when I weighed 40 pounds more, and I was shocked at the fact that I still look like I'm 4 months pregnant! I thought I was looking pretty good, but the camera did not reflect that. So, needless to say, I won't be posting "after" pictures for quite some time.

Tuesday's Points

Goal 24; ?? of 35 extra points used

Potatoes and Canadian Bacon 4 points =4 points total
Fiber One Bar 2 points = 6 points total
Buffalo Chicken Wings 4 points = 10 points total
Dip 2 points? = 12 points total
Chips 4 points = 16 points total
Bean dip 4 points = 20 points total
Broccoli 1 point = 21 points total
Fiber One Bar 2 points = 23 points total
Egg Roll w/ sauce 6 points = 29 points total
Strawberries and ff cool whip 4 points = 33 points total
Chocolate chips 1 point = 34 points total

Okay, so I went over on my points, and I didn’t exercise because I had to take Babycakes to the doctor for his cough. Although, really, I shouldn’t be exercising, because I too have a cough. It’s gotten pretty bad today, so I don’t know if I’ll make it to the gym tomorrow. This really kills me – I love going to the gym! And, I’m afraid that a couple days off will instantly negate what I’ve worked months for. There’s a sign up at the gym that says muscle atrophy occurs 4 times faster than it takes to gain muscle. Also, since I have a cough and slight sore throat from coughing, I want to eat food to make my throat feel better…Lord heal me!

Monday's Points

Goal 24 points; ?? of 35 extra points used

Quinoa 2 points = 2 points total

Corn chips 6 points = 16 points total
Pork and sauerkraut 5 points = 21 points total
Potato w/ lite sour cream 6 points = 27 points total
Corn and lima beans 2 points = 29 points total

I went over on my points, but since I didn’t count points on Sunday, I don’t know how many of my extra 35 I had to use…well, all I can do from here is keep counting! It sure was easy to get back in the habit of not considering the points of what I ate from just one day of not counting points.

Book Review - The Elusive Flame by Kathleen Woodiwiss

I had read that Kathleen E. Woodiwiss was the first to write historical romances, so I got one of her books from the library. I read The Elusive Flame and enjoyed it very much. It was full of hilarious clichés, but assuming Woodiwiss is the first to write historical romance novels, as her website claims, maybe they weren't cliché when she first wrote them. I also had to get beyond the ridiculous sounding names of the two main characters: Cerynise and Beauregard!! Okay, the story is set in the early 1800's, so maybe the names are fitting, but it was just a little to much for me, especially since I have no clue how to pronounce "Cerynise."

Enough with my antics, here's my summation of the story:
When Cerynise Kendall's guardian dies, she is thrown out of her home in England by her guardian’s evil nephew and needs quick passage back to her hometown in the Carolinas. She finds passage on a ship captained by Beauregard Birmingham, whom she was infatuated with during her youth. The evil nephew tries to claim Cerynise as his property, which would prevent her from leaving England legally. But, Captain Birmingham comes to her rescue with proposing a marriage, which would legally allow them both to depart for the Carolinas. Once home, they would annul the marriage.

Three months aboard the ship leaves plenty of time for the two to fall in love, but pride and refusal to communicate their thoughts leaves them with the understanding that each still wants the annulment when they reach shore. I won't spoil the rest, but it is a delightful tale that I enjoyed reading. I have since found out that The Elusive Flame is a sequel to The Flame and the Flower, so I guess I'll have to go read that now.
